  • Sapper Horace Mansfield was born in Ireland on 23 November 1895, the son of John and Esther Mansfield of Cork, Cork County. He had at least six older sisters (Evelyn, Amelia, Violet, Jessie, Ethel and Mabel) and an older brother Cecil. The family was living in Cork for both the 1901 and 1911 censuses of Ireland. The war started in August 1914 and Horace said he enlisted in the British army in November 1915, when he was 20 years old. He joined the Royal Engineers and served with them for about three and a half years. He was discharged in June 1919.

Horace immigrated to Canada in August 1923, sailing from Cork on the SS Caronia, his destination listed as Winnipeg, Manitoba. He lived in Winnipeg for about twenty years. He was married there in 1936 to Annie White. He worked for many years as an electrician and as caretaker of Cheltenham Court. Around 1946 Horace and his wife moved to Kenora, Ontario and he joined the local branch of the Canadian Legion. He was employed as the caretaker of James Block for about 11 years.

Horace passed away in Kenora on 28 August 1967, at age 71. He was survived by his wife Annie, his son John of Balmertown, Ontario and his sister Jessie Bullen in England. Horace is buried in Liberty View Block at Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora.
