  • Roy Alwyn Shelton was born on 12 December 1902 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. His parents were Thomas Shelton and Emma Cartlidge.  In 1911 they were running a boarding house in Margate, Kent, England. Roy had at least nine siblings, including: Tom, Elsie, Alex, Hilda, Lilian, Kenneth, Leslie, Alan and Vera.

On 29 January 1919 Roy enlisted with the Royal Air Force in Blandford, England. He served as an aircraftman until his discharge at Halton Camp on 10 December 1919.

Unemployed and looking to make a new start, Roy left England arriving in Saint John, New Brunswick in April of 1923. He was headed to Hodgeville, Saskatchewan where his employer, John Tyson, was offering farm work.

In 1925 Roy made his way to Kenora, Ontario and began working for the newly established Brooks and Bacus Pulp and Paper Mill. He married Alice Vera Dray on 15 September 1926 in Winnipeg. They made their home in Kenora and raised three children – Pamela, Terry and David. Roy worked as a machinist for the paper mill for twenty years until, in 1945, he left it to operate his own tourist resort. He retired completely in 1952 and after the death of his wife in December 1954, Roy moved to Winnipeg.

Roy died on 24 March 1963 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He and Vera are both buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora.
