  • Andrew Shalin Olson, son of Olaf Olson and Hannah Neilson, was born 01 July 1877 in Helsinborg, Sweden.

    He reported eight years of service in the British Marine Service before coming to Canada in 1903. Andrew was naturalized as a Canadian citizen in 1909.

    He settled in Eriksdale, Manitoba. On 11 August 1913 Andrew married Margaret Elizabeth Renner in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

    At age 38 Andrew enlisted in the 144th Battalion in Winnipeg in January of 1916. During his training at Camp Hughes a previous medical condition was aggravated and Andrew was transferred to the Canadian Army Service Corps in December of 1916. After a medical board examined his case he was discharged as unfit for military service on 29 May 1917.

    In 1925 Andrew and his family moved to a farm in the Pellatt area near Kenora, Ontario. He and Margaret had six children: William (b. 1914), Frederick (b. 1916), Fanny (b. 1918), Otto (b. 1919) Charles (b. 1921), and Annie (Peggy, b. 1925). Three of the boys served in World War 2.

    Andrew died 14 December 1953 in Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora, Ontario.
