Joseph Adolphus LaRocque was born on 17 November 1887 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His parents Augustin LaRocque and Henriette Boivin had married on 14 April 1873 in Ottawa, Ontario. Although he gave his birth year as 1894 on his attestation papers, Roderick Percival (Percy) Lowes was born on 18 March 1898 in Chapleau, Ontario. Lieutenant Malcolm Nathaniel McPhail signed up with the 52nd Battalion in May 1915 and served for almost four years in England, France and Belgium. He returned to Canada in August 1919. Gunner Joseph Andrew Loyst enlisted at age 19 and served in France with the 3rd Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery.
